This is the safest country in the world to visit...

If you want to base your next vacation on where you’re going to feel safest, then Iceland might be the place to visit.

It’s on top of this year’s Global Peace Index – for the 11th year in a row.

Each year, an Australian think tank crunches data to work out which countries are safest and most dangerous out of 163 independent states and territories.

It looks at factors like crime rates, terrorist attacks, murder rates, weapon imports and exports, rates of people being incarcerated, corruption and the government functioning.

The island’s crime rates are tiny, with just 1.8 murders per 100,000 people per year in a population of 300,000.

Iceland also has no military, which means less risk of war, and its police are also not armed.

However, Iceland wasn’t the only European country in the top 10.

Austria came in at number three, Portugal at number four and Denmark at number five.

The Czech Republic got number seven on the list while Ireland came in 10th place.

The UK came in a dismal 57th place, although the good news is that we don’t have to travel far to find peace.

The United States came in 121st place, while Syria and Iraq came in at the bottom, after years of conflict.

The top 20 safest countries in the world:

Peter Plogojowitz (Serbian form: Petar Blagojević/Петар Благојевић) was a Serbian peasant believed to have become a vampire after his death and to have killed nine of his fellow villagers. The case was described in the report of Imperial Provisor Frombald, an official of the Austrian administration, who witnessed the exorcism via impalation by stake of Plogojowitz. Peter Plogojowitz lived in a village named Kisilova (Kisiljevo) in the part of Serbia that temporarily passed from Ottoman into Austrian hands after the Treaty of Passarowitz (1718) and was ceded back to the Ottomans with the Treaty of Belgrade (1739). Plogojowitz died in 1725. His death was followed by a spate of other sudden deaths (after very short maladies of about twenty-four hours each). Within eight days, nine persons perished.
